UPN's SOUTH BEACH!! JLo's TV Show Debuts!!

I am – Hercules!!

It’s an hourlong about two Brooklyn fellows who decide to relocate to Miami to seek romance and fortune.

Jennifer Lopez decided to produce a TV show. She chose Matt Cirulnick, the screenwriter behind the Wood Harris/Mekhi Pfifer vehicle “Paid in Full” to script it. Viewers will wonder whether UPN should have hired Eric Cartman’s hand instead.

But what matters Herc’s opinion?

Variety says:

… most viewers will be at wit's end wondering why they have put up with the ludicrous plot, the inane dialogue and the pitiful characters squeezed between the glamour shots of southern Florida. Hourlong flops miserably in an attempt to be the East Coast version of "The OC." UPN has parked two hours of this drivel into its premiere slot, revealing that it doesn't get all that interesting nor does it escape the cliches of buff boys and girls being their trite, narcissistic and shallow selves as they struggle with life's inconveniences. The scripts are sophomoric, the acting wooden and the direction uninspired -- show starts so thin it must have been on the South Beach Diet for months.

The Hollywood Reporter says:

… every now and then, if a story emerges, it never hangs around for very long or gets told with conviction. … You have to give credit to [Giancarlo] Esposito and Vanessa Williams (who plays the hotel owner and Alex's mom) for trying to breathe some life into their roles, but it's like building a skyscraper with Silly Putty. And it doesn't help that most of the other cast members say their lines as if doing so was a form of punishment. … you'd think that someone somewhere down the line, perhaps writers Matt Cirulnick and Greg Cirulnick, would have lobbied for the rudiments of a story, characters with texture and dialogue more sophisticated than shopping mall conversation.

USA Today gives it one (out of four) stars and says:

… Even the coldest winter wouldn't make a trip to South Beach worthwhile. … the kind of new UPN show that used to make viewers dread new UPN shows …

Entertainment Weekly gives it a “C-plus” and says:

… not all that good, despite the efforts of Vanessa Williams (as a hard-edged hotelier). Still: Gee, that ocean's sparkly, ain't it?

8 p.m. Wednesday. UPN.
