DROP DEAD SEXY review

Here's a fun little indie movie that was shot here in Austin last year during SXSW film festival... Actually, just outside of town. At last year's Texas Film Hall Of Fame, Crispin Glover introduced me to the filmmakers, Jason Lee and this gorgeous goddess that plays the dead body in the film, her name was Melissa Keller. And she sat down to chat with me 3 separate times that evening, and all I could think was. Yeah, I'd have sex with her dead body. Now, that wasn't just a spontaneous thought... it was after her telling me the complicated relationship between her dead body and Crispin Glover's character.

This whole film is carried by the charm and charisma of Jason Lee and Crispin Glover. The significant unease given off by Pruitt Taylor Vince. And then the pure titillation and intoxication that Melissa Keller plays the dead body. I know that sounds odd, but it really is an astonishingly lovely dead body. And watching the dead body in bra and panties next to Crispin's brief wearing body... it was like some crazy out-take from a remake of ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW gone right!

The film is essentially an Abbott & Costello film. Two dimwits are given the task to drive cigarettes to Mexico for a premium. The load catches fire, blows up the truck, and now they're in to a shady character for $250,000! Jason's character of Frank is the idea man, the straight man. He was fired early this day from his job as a roadside icon that waved people into a car lot to buy cars. Crispin's character of idiot gravedigging Eddie... is a jewel! Now, do you like Crispin Glover in movies? I do. I find he elevates most every film he's in to a level unheard of. He's kinda like Rondo Hatton in that respect. He plays eccentrics, characters that I just can't wait to settle down and watch. He's a gravedigger that doesn't like to know anything about the bodies he buries. So he doesn't get attached to them.

When they end up on the lam with an impossible debt, they decide to dig up the dead rich wife of the richest man in town for the priceless necklace that Eddie remembers her wearing at her wake. Things get complicated, Crispin can't rebury her, cuz now he's attached to her, he cares for her and doesn't want her to be lonely. Heh. This is where as the narrator of stage mysteries would say... the plot thickens!

Now - if this description doesn't have you twitching like a cadaver struck by lightning, let me add one last image in your mind. In Frank & Eddie's fumbling investigation of the gorgeous corpse, they decide to bother Herman the Mortician to find out for sure how she died. Now Herman is played by none other than Brad Dourif. Yes, CHUCKY! And on his slab at the moment is a 22 year old hot as hell nude lady, whose husband shot her dead. And he's having a candlelit evening with her. Yes, this is one of those movies. Maybe I'm eager to like movies at SXSW this year, but I really dug this film. Jason and Crispin make a helluva team. It looks a bit cheap, but hell... so did all the Abbott & Costello flicks or even those Bowery Boy flicks. This is in that spirit, only more risque'! Cool flick!
