Moriarty

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

I love you guys. Seriously. Yes, in "that" way. So, this week, I’m doing three separate DVD giveaways, plus a chance to win an iPod Photo, which is a pretty snazzy machine. I’ve been using my iPod religiously since I got it last year, and the chance to give one away... well... that’s just cool.

First, though, a quick update on the Vogon Poetry contest I ran last month. There were (no kidding) about 4200 entries to the contest. I have boiled the pool down to about 50 right now, and I have a few friends helping me with the final judging. I’m sure they’ll be ex-friends soon, because the worst of the worst is truly rotten in this contest, and I’ll be pleased to be done with the judging soon enough. Have faith... the prize is forthcoming shortly.

Today, let’s start with our GREATEST AMERICAN HERO giveaway. I’ve been watching my copy of this box set for the last few days, and I’m surprised how well the writing holds up. It’s a genuinely good show. So often, I watch something I was fond of as a kid and it’s just embarrassing, but this is a pretty smart and funny riff on the superhero genre that was coming to a close around 1981, when this show began. Anchor Bay’s done a nice job with this series, so I’m going to give away four copies of the box set to the runners-up, and the grand prize winner in this contest will win a copy of the box set plus that iPod Photo I mentioned. Sweet, eh? Almost as sweet as the opening to the show was.

There is a rabid and devoted cult that has sprung up around DONNIE DARKO, and this week, Fox Home Entertainment is releasing the director’s cut of the film. I’m going to be giving away five copies of the movie to readers, and it’s a heck of a nice disc. The print is great, the supplemental material on disc two is well put together, and I’m about to watch the film with the commentary by Richard Kelly and Kevin Smith (!) playing. Should be fun.

Finally, we’re going to be giving away copies of one of my very favorite films from last year, the criminally underrated I HEART HUCKABEES. Being able to spread the joy where this one’s concerned is a genuine pleasure, especially when the disc is this great. All of you who said, “The film’s dumb and doesn’t mean anything” should probably watch the extras and then try to say that with a straight face. You’re free not to like it, of course, but dismissing it as empty or devoid of meaning... well... don’t be silly. Five of you will win copies of the two-disc set as well as an I HEART HUCKABEES keychain.

And to enter, all you have to do is send me an e-mail with either “HUCKABEES,” “GREATEST AMERICAN HERO,” or “DONNIE DARKO” in the header. You can only enter one contest at a time, so if you want to enter all three, send three separate e-mails. Only entries sent to this address will be accepted, and only if you get them in within the next 24 hours. That means you have until 10:00 on Monday night, PST, to get your entries in.
