Derek Flint Has Seen Seth MacFarlane

I am – Hercules!!

It’s the new cartoon from the creator of “The Family Guy.” It joins the Fox schedule beginning Sunday, Feb. 6.

Longtime Ain't It Cool correspondent “Derek Flint” seems less than excited:

Hey, Herc. I've seen the premiere episode of "American Dad" that will be airing along with a "special" episode of "The Simpsons" after the Super-bowl.

"American Dad" is from the creator of "Family Guy," Seth MacFarlane. I'm not the most avid fan of "Family Guy." To me, it's hit or miss with the misses far outnumbering the hits.

"American Dad," on the other hand, is a colossal miss and one of the more ill conceived shows you're likely to see. Some of the publicity compares "American" to "All In The Family," but what MacFarlane is blatantly ripping off is his own show. Every character from "Guy" has a counterpart in "Dad," and instead of a talking dog you get a sarcastic space alien and instead of an evil baby you get an evil talking goldfish. It's amazingly unfunny.

The title character, Stan Smith, is a gung ho trigger happy CIA agent. The only real laugh in the thing comes when he shoots a toaster out of paranoia -- and that gag comes from the eighties show "Sledge Hammer!" who Smith acts just like. (See the side by side comparison of the two characters in their advertising and you'll see what I mean.) This entire show could have been written on Xerox paper and is yet another example of the sophomore jinx.

Bring back "Futurama."
