Hey folks, Harry here... Come Thursday, January 20th, 2005 around 1pm through Monday, January 24th, 2005 - I'll be calling Boston, Massachusetts my home away from home. Is it a top secret conference with John Kerry about how to set the wrong right... um, I mean left? No. Am I there to perform a new curse upon the town in the memory of the great Bambino? No. I'm there for a 100% diehard fandom through and through convention called ARISIA!
Why? Because they asked. Because Boston kicks ass. Because it's winter and I need to see smoke escaping gutters and manhole covers and tons and tons and tons of snow. Because I need to be around fans that understand mass consumption of alcohol. Because they're a convention that shows 35mm Film Prints of Science Fiction/Fantasy films. Because they're showing Bela Lugosi's WHITE ZOMBIE! Because there's wicked hot geek women in Chainmail outfits on days where the high is 12 degrees fahrenheit. Because they show old NASA film prints of space missions. Because it takes place in a gorgeous hotel. Because they scheduled me nearly two years ago for this coming weekend, and that shows a certain degree of faith that I'd still be the geek I am in the future. Because I get to host folks in my room where we'll get drunk and argue about what the true Star Wars is, which android/alien/cartoon babe/hunk we'd most like to fuck, and is life over now that LORD OF THE RINGS is done. As I get drunk, Stories about JOHN CARTER OF MARS, the new AICN Site Redesign, GHOST TOWN and what happened between Moriarty & I in Las Vegas all those long years ago will surface in my esoteric rantings. Because while it's a convention, it's low key and low pressure while having a true love of all aspects of fandom. Because you might be there too. Because... what the hell else was I gonna do this weekend?
What am I going to be doing there? To be honest - I haven't a clue. I think I'll be on panels, but I'm not sure. I think I'll be hosting some 35mm & 16mm film screenings, but I'm not sure what films or prints. I know I'll be inviting folks up to my room for mass inebriation and decadence. I don't think I'll be filksinging, but you never know.
So my dear friends, strangers, geeks and fandom lovers - I hope to see you in Boston at ARISIA - and hopefully - we'll have a wicked blast. Seeya soon! - Harry
