Begin Now Bad Robot Wednesday!! New LOST and First New ALIAS Since May!!

I am – Hercules!!

"It was a physical pain to see where the show [“Alias”] was and where I felt it needed to be and I was so hopeful that we would get picked up so we could do the corrections that so desperately needed to be made," “Alias” creator J.J. Abrams told zap2it last July.

Lots of “Alias” fans felt Abrams’ pain. While some Coaxial readers took issue with the fact that “Deadwood,” “Six Feet Under” or “Nip/Tuck” didn’t make my 2004 top-ten list, nobody complained about “Alias” being absent for the first time.

Tonight we get our first new episode of “Alias” since its disappointing third season ended way back in May, and Abrams himself co-wrote the episode. (After that, he’s presumably going back to prepping his feature directorial debut, “Mission:Impossible 3,” and handing the TV franchise off to its revamped (no pun intended) writing staff, which now includes highly-regarded “Angel” vets Jeff Bell and Drew Goddard.)

"I can tell you my mission statement: Go back to what works about the show," Abrams told zap2it last summer. "Go back to character first. Go back to Sydney and Vaughn as a relationship that you rooted for. Go back to Sydney and Jack as a conflict of parent and child. I don't want to say too much, because I don't want to give away where it's going, but go back the dynamics that made the show absolutely function. The irony is that I felt the show was at its best.. when SD-6 existed and that's sorta the biggest hint that I will give in that storyline."

The season opener is preceded by the year’s first new episode of the freshman smash “Lost,” which was co-created by Abrams as “Alias” floundered. Ironically, some are predicting that “Alias,” by following such a huge hit, will itself achieve new ratings highs.

“Lost”: 8 p.m. Wednesday ABC
“Alias”: 9 p.m. Wednesday ABC
