I’ve seen so many people running the story about how M. Night Shyamalan had been part of a documentary about THE VILLAGE and how it went bad and how he pulled out of it and how he was trying to stop it from airing and... well, and it’s all nonsense. A publicity stunt. A big silly hoax on the public, and now, finally, the network is coming clean on the eve of the thing airing.

I’m all for innovative marketing, but there’s a trust that you build with an audience, and everything about THE VILLAGE smacks of M. Night violating that trust, whether it’s this mockumentary or whether it’s the way the film itself is structured. We’re starting to get early reports from press screenings in New York, but no full reviews, and I’ll say this... reactions are hotly divided. I’d love to hear from people who are enthusiastic about the film, both positively and negatively, because I’m curious to see what people are reacting to. I’ve heard great things about Bryce Howard’s performance from some people, and other viewers so far seem to feel the entire thing is too mannered for their tastes. Either way, the only reason to tune in to Sci-Fi’s three-hour self-love-fest this Sunday night is to get a glimpse of the footage from the film, since you can now rest assured... there’s no buried secret. There’s no behind-the-scenes fight. It’s just a promo piece, albeit much, much longer than normal.
