Angel Goes To Blighty

Previously, on “Angel”:
  • 5.1 Charles gets legal.
  • 5.2 Spike gets into a necromancer.
  • 5.3 Angel meets wolfgirl.
  • 5.4 Spike eludes Hell.
  • 5.5 Krevlornswath writes destinies.
  • 5.6 Number Five remembers.
  • 5.7 Wes greets a familiar face.
  • 5.8 Wolfram employees go nuts.
  • 5.9 Harmony Kendall takes center stage.
  • 5.10 Spike lives the life of Angel.
  • 5.11 Willow's craziest slayer gets loose.
  • 5.12 Xander’s ex awakens.
  • 5.13 During World War II (long before Maggie Walsh was born) a “government initiative” recruits Angel for a World War II submarine mission (where he runs into another former “Buffy” regular).
  • 5.14 Team Angel takes on evil kiddie-show puppets.
  • 5.15 Winifred Burkle suffers a setback.

Casting pages from 5.16 suggest we will find Angel and Spike in England (!), where they encounter Drogyn, a monk-like “Keeper of the Well” who might remind one just a tiny bit of the bridgekeeper from “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” Drogyn threatens to kill anyone who dares ask a question (because, we learn, the keeper cannot lie). The vamps are there about Illyria, a very old demon who was laid to rest in the well for millennia - until its recent disappearance.

Buffy Reunion on Gilmore Girls

* There’s a “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reunion on “Gilmore Girls” 4.16, with writer Jane Espenson again putting words in the mouth of Danny Strong – who used to play Nerd of Doom Jonathan Levinson and now plays Rory’s Yale Daily News editor, Doyle. Espenson wrote many key Jonathan episodes, including “Earshot,” “Superstar” and “Life Serial.”

* Marion Ross also returns in the episode as Richard Gilmore’s uber-rich mom.

* This represents only Espenson’s second “Gilmore” script ever. More of her work, a brief rhyming riddle, can be found in the latest issue of Joss Whedon’s “Tales of the Vampires,” which went on sale last Wednesday.

The OC: The Limp in Summer's Future

* Marissa’s dad Jimmy will continue hanging with Hailey. Because every member of the Cooper clan must somehow become romantically involved with one of the Cohens

* Sandy will take on another case involving his superrich father-in-law.

* Summer will be recruited to anchor a fundraiser kissing booth. “We need a girl who’s comfortable getting paid to make out with a bunch of guys,” notes the boy recruiting her. “Naturally, I thought of you.”

* Seth Cohen will drop Anna Stern and begin boning Summer – boning her so violently she’ll literally be left with a limp!

* At Anna’s urging and with many others watching, Seth will demand that Summer publicly admit their relationship. “Acknowledge me now,” he implores from atop a coffee counter, “or lose me forever.”

Herc's Anti-DVD Shelf: Freaks & Geeks

Are we finally getting our “Freaks and Geeks” DVD in about two months? From www.mst3kinfo.com:

Last summer we told you that the campaign to get the TV show Freaks and Geeks (where Josh "J. Elvis" Weinstein was a producer and where Trace Beaulieu and Joel Hodgson made appearances) onto DVD had been successful. This week details of the set were released: It will come out as a six-disk set on April 6th from Shout! Factory and DreamWorks Television.

It will contain all 18 episodes, including three that never aired on broadcast TV. The original music will be preserved and there will be more than 40 hours of bonus material, including a director's cut of the pilot episode, behind-the-scenes footage, deleted scenes, outtakes, alternate cuts, blooper reels and a whopping 28 audio commentaries by the actors, directors, network executives, crew members, obsessive fans, and even parents of cast members. Josh was among them, offering commentary on the episode "Beers and Weirs."

And there's going to be another MST3K dvd set released in March.

I notice that when that Drew McMoriarty guy does his little “DVD Corner” column, 99 percent of the talkbacks ignore everything but his closing question. So here’s mine: Which TV show are you most anxious to see released in affordably priced complete-season DVD sets? Here’s just some you can’t yet buy from their copyright holders:

Aeon Flux
The Bob Newhart Show
Columbo
Freaks and Geeks
Gilmore Girls
Kung Fu*
Moonlighting
Murder One
The Rockford Files
Star Trek
TV Funhouse
Undeclared

*goes on sale March 16 !

Be warned though: Herc no longer buys DVDs - and the rest of the world will soon stop too. Trust me: in three years, you won’t want to look at your DVDs; the format will be less popular than 8-tracks. Save your money, honey. There’s a new format we can afford that makes every DVD I’ve ever seen look like dogshit. More on this later.
