Another Herculean endorsement for another soon-to-vanish series. Hopefully it’s not vanishing forever (but we’ll know more in May, when NBC announces next season’s schedules).
While it lacks the world-class wit that makes “The West Wing” something to covet forever on DVD, “Mister Sterling” is highly complex and true enough to its subject matter to make for compelling drama week in and week out.
Inspired in all likelihood by Sen. Jim Jeffords’ world-shaking defection from the Republicans in the real-life Congress, the show is both fun and educational. And while the series focuses on the savvy staff the naïve and independent Sterling inherited from his embattled Democratic predecessor, the real fun is found with Sterling’s fellow lawmakers: Gerald McRaney, Harris Yulin and Kathryn Harrold are particularly complicated presences on the Senate floor.
Oh, and Sterling’s campaign opponents are terrific too. As is “Ally McBeal” vet Portia de Rossi as a movie star angling to get into the young senator’s pants.
Also? Porn superstar Jenna Jameson has a recurring role as herself!
