Our First Review For DREAMCATCHER!!

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

Boy, I want this one to work. It’s one of King’s better recent yarns, and that cast sure looks good together. Let’s see what this first-time spy thought of tonight’s screening:

I was able to see a test screening of DreamCatcher tonight and being a big Kasdan fan, I rushed to make sure I was able to obtain my seat. I will keep this simple review of the first cut of the film as spoiler free as possible.

First off, I have never read Dream Catcher so I am unable to compare the film to the novel. Hopefully someone else who attended may bare light upon that aspect of the film.

This is unlike anything that Kasdan has done thus far But he is right on the mark with his directing. The film contains a nice mixture of genres such as a touch of horror (and yes gore!!) Action, suspense, and drama. The acting was for the most part excellent. Jason Lee steals the first act of the film before the shit hits the fan. His one liner's and reactions to pressure was hilarious.

Again I don’t wish to give away any of the major plot elements so I am trying to overall give my impression of the film. I enjoyed it. 2 scenes that really stood out for me was when we get our first glimpse at the aliens. Now I know everyone wants to know what they look like so I would describe it as looking like our classic “gray’s” Alien. Big black eyes oval shaped head and thin body. But with a bit of a twist. Ill save that for you to find out. There are a few parts that needs trimming down, specifically a scene where Morgan Freeman jumps from a helicopter that I almost fell over laughing it looked so bad. I am also not sure how I feel about the use of British accent for our main villain, the alien who takes over the body of Jonesy, one of the 4 friends. I am not sure how to take that, it was a bit odd and I am still trying to understand why they went with that it is obvious that they wanted to separate the 2 so we would know who was who, but I am not sure it worked well. I think that it would have come off more serious with something else. Another interesting addition in that part of the plot is how Jonesy still conscious in a part of his mind, though has no control of his body. The latter half of the film has him looking out and witnessing events as they happen via a window. I don’t want to go too much into that as it’s important to the film but wanted to point out how impressed I was.

Now another point that I hope the do something about is the ending. I am not one that needs all things answered and packaged into a nice box. I just want to walk away feeling satisfied. The ending is anti climactic for what has taken place in the rest of the film and does indeed leave you feeling like something was just missing.

The film overall is very pleasing. I did enjoy myself a great deal with the mystery of the 4 friends and how it all tied together. But they do need to do some minor cuts hear and there and possibly do something with the ending to make it end with a bang.

Thanks to anyone who took time to read this garbled attempt at a simple review, it is very late here and I am dead tired.

Man, it’d be great if Lawrence Kasdan had done something really cool with this one, and it’s not like there’s any chance I’m missing this in the theater, what with that ANIMATRIX short attached to it and all...

"Moriarty" out.
