Another SOLARIS Review Docks In Orbit!!

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

Mr. Beaks still hasn’t stopped crying. It’s the unmanliest thing I’ve ever seen. Remember Ben Stiller at the end of THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, as he walks out of the house after giving Mary up? Remember how he starts just SOBBING, and it’s so incredibly pathetic? Well, Beaks is crying about 20 times more pathetically. I even took him with me to see a screening of EQUILIBRIUM today, a really cool little SF film that Bob and Harvey are sitting on, in an effort to cheer him up.

He should at least take heart in this review, more positive than either of the ones yesterday:

Hey Film Fans,

First off, I hate long reviews, and I won't waste your time covering the same ground as the previous ones. Here are my impressions of SOLARIS:

Soderbergh has constructed an incredibly stylistic piece of cinema. If I had to summarize it, I would say that it is a cross between the style and pacing of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY and the ideas behind WAKING LIFE. This film deals with life and death, what it is to be human. What I love about the world that Soderbergh created is that it is very matter of fact about the sci-fi setting. In many respects it reminded me of Japanese Anime. This film is not mainstream and I don't expect it to make any money. I think it will be the biggest, most expensive, art house movie in recent memory. It is a film for intellectuals who don't mind if all the questions are answered by the end of the film. The biggest problem with this film is the pacing. It is a prime example of why a director should not edit his own film. It is inflated by about 20 minutes in my opinion. Soderbergh was a little over indulgent and I think he fell in love with his camera moves and style.

Overall, I think that most Kubrick and Soderbergh fans will love this movie once it gets cut down (I really hope it does, because it has the potential to be amazing). Harry, Moriarty - I think you guys will like it. I think anyone with half a brain will appreciate what this film is trying to evoke and accomplish.

Keep it real,

CM

Thanks, man. I hope you’re right. One thing’s for sure... there’s no one response we’ll be seeing as far as this film’s concerned. To my mind, that’s a good thing.

"Moriarty" out.
