CBS's ROBBERY HOMICIDE DIVISION 1.1!!
|
I am – Hercules!!
“Heat” was Herc’s favorite movie of 1995. It was written and directed by Michael Mann and had Tim Sizemore in it. Now these boys are back, and they’re back on the small screen, baby.
10 p.m. Friday. CBS.
All we’ve seen so far is a 17-minute collection of scenesfrom the first episode, which quickly establishes the show’s grim, violent and visually adventurous intensity. Few know better than Mann know how to make a city come vibrantly alive on film, and veteran movie actor Sizemore tackles his role with steely confidence, a real asset in this season’s oversaturated field of crime dramas.
"RHD" could be the defining cop show of the 2000s the way "Miami Vice" was in the '80s; Michael Mann is the rare producer capable of capturing the zeitgeist of two different eras. … What "Robbery Homicide Division" lacks, however, are compelling lead actors, scripts that don't have huge lulls and any glimpse of hope that life is not a dead-end street -- touches that will make audiences want to return each Friday rather than change channels to the pat "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." …. Show has the look of a winner, but as long as it lacks an inviting tone it will be backup for NBC's Friday squadron, "Law & Order: SVU."
CBS needs another police action-drama like radio needs another right-wing talk show, but here it is anyway. … The best thing "Robbery Homicide Division" has going for it, aside from director Stephen Gyllenhaal's mood-setting scenes and expert use of the city as a canvas, is a cast that looks the part. … That means that even if parts of the story are a little hard to swallow -- and they are -- at least you can believe in the people chasing down the criminals…. Sizemore turns in a solid performance, though you wish his character had a few quirks. As it is, his decisive, incisive nature is almost too perfect, and his ability to discern whether a witness or suspect is telling the truth could make polygraph tests obsolete
