Hey folks, Harry here... Ravvy was so inspired to see BLUE CRUSH that he decided to see it tonight, instead of a double bill of beautiful 35 mm prints of THE FRENCH CONNECTION and BONNIE & CLYDE! But once he heard about Faizon Love in his "dumduddydum" well there was no stopping him. Quint and Auntie Meat also arrived and the first to complete his review is Quint, master of the waves and known for his 7 consecutive perfect scores of 10s at the Grand Championship Surfing Competition in the waters off Amity Island. Though it wasn't no lame coral under those waves, but an eating machine... That's right QUINT!!! Here he is... Pay attention...
Ahoy, maties. The totally bitchin', if not seriously crusty, ol' seaman, Quint, here with a look at the bodacious babes in bikinis epic BLUE CRUSH. Now, I'm gonna keep this review pretty short. This isn't a movie that needs an in-depth analysis and I gots a lot more writing to get done before I can rest. Fair warning.
Hot babes. Small bikinis. Short shorts. Big waves. Kickin' soundtrack. That's all you really need to know. The film isn't anything more or anything less than what they've shown you folks in the trailers and TV spots. It doesn't need to be. It's entertaining, it's pretty (in more ways than one) and it's a lot of fun. Is it deep? Noooooo. Is it pure fluff? Maybe not pure fluff, but it's definitely tainted fluff. You get the popcorn summer movie fun and bit more character than usual, but it is still a SURFER GIRL MOVIE. Will it win any awards? Yes. At next year's MTV Movie Awards, sure. Oscars? I doubt it.
The two standouts in the film for me were up and coming Kate Bosworth in the lead and one of my favorite character actors working today, Mr. Faizon Love. This movie is worth seeing for the two of them, especially the lovely Ms. Bosworth in her skimpy attire and the robust Mr. Love in his even skimpier attire. Both are beautiful... One in a drool-drool-pant-pant way and the other in a laugh 'til you cry way. I'll leave it up to you genius' to figure out which is which.
You folks might remember my RULES OF ATTRACTION set report I sent in a while back (read it here!!! http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=11086). That was a whirlwind of a set visit. Cool shit was happening everywhere. I was meeting people of all sorts, of every status. Actors, DPs, extras, producers, etc. One of the people that stood out the most was the striking Kate Bosworth. I had no recollection of her past work and wouldn't have even known if she was an actress had she not been introduced to me as such. Her eyes are striking, one light blue, the other a speckled brown. Her eyes were memorable by themselves, but what really stuck in memory was how much of a sweetheart she was. Easy to talk to, attentive when listening, kind and funny. All around cool girl.
Now I've seen her take command of a film and will be one of the first to say that Kate Bosworth is the next big star. She seemed to be a joy to work with and comes across with equal grace onscreen. The way Universal is pushing her, with all the magazine covers and such, she's on the fast track to super stardom... And she's taking roles that challenge her as an actress (RULES OF ATTRACTION) as well as the big budget studio flicks that millions more will see (BLUE CRUSH). No matter what, you'll be seeing a lot more of Kate Bosworth, that's for damn sure.
BLUE CRUSH isn't amazing. It isn't a great movie, but it's a fun one. I thought I wasn't going to dig it very much, but I walked out with a smile on my face. If you found anything whatsoever appealing in the trailers (including the scantly clad womenses), give the movie a shot. Check it out at a matinee showing. You get good performances by all the leads, beautiful Hawaiian scenery, an entertaining story and Faizon Love in a nuthugger. You can't ask for more from a summer surfer chick flick. But what do I know? This is coming from somebody whose personal favorite surfing-related film is BACK TO THE BEACH. Take this review for ballast, chief.
