What The Hell Is Michael Mann

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

”In 15 minutes, he flips five positions on the Chicago Commodities exchange, unloads Malasian tin ore futures, and makes three trades in Hong Kong.”

”The feds know anyone can play the markets. But to win every time – then pile up the chips at the baccarat tables?”

”Mr. H has it all – the girl, the car, the life... forcing the question that no-one can answer: how can one man be absolutely right, all the time?”

”Starring Benicio del Toro, LUCKY STAR is a dark, edgy exploration of the nature of chance and the essence of luck. Directed by Michael Mann, LUCKY STAR sweeps from the boiler-room pressure of the stock markets, through the smoke-filled gambling dens of LA’s Koreatown, to the edges of your imagination.”

So... what’s really going on here?!

Well, according to Ananova, it’s a commercial campaign exclusive to the UK for the Mercedes-Benz SL-class sports cars.

Michael Mann decided to do a trailer for a film that doesn’t exist, and he managed to get del Toro to play his lead. When asked if he’d want to do LUCKY STAR as a film for real, Ananova reports him saying, "The picture itself I can almost imagine as a complete motion picture. It feels like Kiss Me Deadly which was made I think in 1956."

At least this explains the flood of e-mails I got from readers today who were amazed that Mann had managed to make a whole film without a single word about it leaking. It certainly looks like a Mann film, although I’m not sure if he worked with longtime DP Dante Spinotti on this or not. Right now, Spinotti is shooting RED DRAGON for Brent Ratner, odd since Spinotti shot MANHUNTER for Mann. Maybe that explains why some of the images in the new RED DRAGON trailer look to be lifted almost directly from Mann’s film, even though Ratner seems to take shots at Mann every time he talks to the press right now.

Anyway, check this out for a smile. Gotta admit... the film might not be half bad.

"Moriarty" out.
