In news that will perhaps come as a disappointment to anyone who saw the Sci-Fi Channel miniseries versions of “RoboCop” and “Firestarter,” “Battlestar Galactica” will now be a miniseries on Sci-Fi.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (4-hour miniseries) - SCI FI re-imagines the groundbreaking and beloved series in which ``a rag, tag fugitive fleet'' of the last remnants of mankind searches for its true home. Fleeing the aliens responsible for the slaughter of their homeworld, the Battlestar Galactica survivors must meet a whole new set of challenges. This intriguing twist on a classic will be written by writer Ronald D. Moore (Roswell, Mission Impossible II) with Breck Eisner (Steven Spielberg's Taken; The Invisible Man) attached to direct. Distributed by USA Cable Entertainment, the Project will be executive produced by David Eick (American Gothic, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Spy Game).
The good news, of course, is the pilot is being authored by “Star Trek” vet Ron Moore, who co-authored “First Contact” and many an episode for “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and “Deep Space Nine.” (Odd that they left his “Trek” credits out of the press release, though!)
The bad news is “X-Men” producer Tom DeSanto, who has been shepherding the “Galactica” project for some time, may not be involved in the mini version. “This news came as a shock to Tom as well as to the rest of us, and appears to have come out of nowhere,” said Chris Feehan, co-president of the Battlestar Galactica Fan Club. “Tom did confirm the news with both the president of StudiosUSA and the Sci-Fi Channel and his role going forward in the production is unclear. Tom has set up a meeting late next week to discuss his role and determine what direction they intend to go with the series.”
