Hey, Harry, its me, Mr. MEGIDDO himself, The Foywonder. I thought I'd bring to everyone's attention the fact that the trailer for the new Godzilla movie has gone online. Despite the lukewarm review from your Asian correspondence, the vast majority of those who have saw GODZILLA, MOTHRA, KING GHIDORAH: DAIKAIJU SOUKOUGEKI at the Tokyo Film Festival have given it rave reviews. Directed by Shusuke Kaneko, who's recent GAMERA trilogy revolutionized the daikaiju (giant monster) movie, GMK is basically an early 1960's style Godzilla movie with a 21st century mentality. For those thinking this is going to be another just another Godzilla as a superhero movie, think again. This time, he's back to being a total villain terrorizing Japan. Its the trio of Baragon (most famous from his original appearance in FRANKENSTEIN CONQUERS THE WORLD), Mothra, King Ghidorah. And word is that the story is quite good and the characters actually have more to do than just run away or watch from afar.
As you'll see in the trailer, the special effects, while not up to ILM standards or on par with those in GAMERA 3, are a vast improvement over past Godzilla movies, especially G2K, and quite good for a movie that only cost a fraction of your average Hollywood film. Hey, they computer effects in this seem no worse than the CGI in THE MUMMY RETURNS and better than Beast Wars Satan from MEGIDDO! I know most of you will still entertain yourselves with the MAN IN SUIT chant, but there's no way you can say that the special effects are as bad as they were in GODZILLA 2000. How can you not love that low angle shot of Godzilla firing his breath or that wonderful image of Mothra getting blasted in mid-air. The only negative drawback to the trailer is that its kinda dark so some of the night time stuff is hard to make out, but the majority of what you will see should be enough to convince you that the Godzilla movies are finally evolving.
