Hey folks, Harry here... Pixar (aka the most brilliant film unit on earth) and Disney have been having 'interesting' backs and forths... A lot of this is about positioning Pixar for the next deal with Disney or as an independent company... Personally, I would love for Pixar to become its own releasing arm... Separate from Disney. Frankly they've been the jewel in Disney's crown since Katzenberg left Disney, and I would love for PIXAR to have the freedom to do whatever it was that Lasseter wanted to do.... Whatever directions he felt he wanted to go in. I know that John once wanted to do a CG adaptation of Chad Oliver's THE SHORES OF ANOTHER SEA, which was a heavy duty serious science fiction story. So that is in Lasseter or was at one point. The future of Pixar is bright no matter where it goes, but I would love to see what they could do on their own legpower.
PREMIERE MAGAZINE quizzes John Lasseter on whether or not "Toy Story 3" will get made. Originally you will recall, TS2 was supposed to go straight to video - Disney apparently want all their sequels to go straight to video. But when it went theatrical and made big time bucks, another theatrical sequel wasn't out of the question and is definetly still on the cards.The Toy Story 3 deal Lasseter hopes to get is : Equal share in profit and financing (Pixar and Disney).
So is Toy Story 3 in the offing? According to Eisner "definetely". Lasseter hedges He's still noodling with story ideas but he would never say never to another sequel. Catmull says that he hopes that Pixar make TS3 "sometime". However, both companies agree that it's not in the pipeline (the next 4 are Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, an original movie from Lasseter and a film by Bird).
It sounds like putting TS3 on the backburner was Eisner's idea, so they could pursue Lasseter's next orihinal film. "I didn't want to wait until 2008 for John's original idea. We have the right to do a sequel irrespective of the two deals. I don't need a new deal to make Toy Story 3. I can get 5 movies plus Toy Story 3".
Finally, Pixar can't talk Toy Story 3 to another studio. Life is Long though and the brains behind the potential sequel hint that a deal will no doubt be negotiated in the future for the third instalment. "Audiences will almost demand that it be made" they say. But because John Lasseter can pick and choose what he wants to do next, he will concentrate on his original film.
